Three Silvertips up for WHL awards Wednesday, plus the USHL draft

There are a couple of things of note in tonight’s blog post.

First of all, three Everett Silvertips are up for WHL season awards Wednesday at the ceremony in Calgary. Carter Hart is up for his second straight Goaltender of the Year Award, Kevin Davis is in contention for the Most Sportsmanlike Player and Brian King is the Western Conference nominee for Scholastic Athlete of the year.

Hart is the reigning WHL and CHL Goaltender of the Year and seems to be a shoo-in to repeat. He’s going against Zach Sawchenko formerly of the Moose Jaw Warriors in a repeat of last season’s awards. Sawchenko recently announced he will not be returning for his overage season and will instead attend the University of Alberta next fall.

Davis had a breakout year offensively for the Tips as he quarterbacked the top power play unit. He’s competing against Eastern Conference nominee Tyler Steenbergen of Swift Current.

At last check King was on track to be the valedictorian of Everett High School next month. The New Hampshire-born, Colorado-developed King recorded 1490 on the SAT and has been known to tutor teammates when they need help.

The awards ceremony begins at 11 a.m. PDT and will be live-streamed on the WHL website.

– The USHL held its two-phase draft Monday and Tuesday. The first phase that occurred Monday disperses rights to U-17 players and two Everett Silvertips prospects were selected.

Forward Dylan Holloway, a Bragg Creek, Alberta, native and a sixth-round pick by Everett in last year’s bantam draft, went in the fourth round and 50th overall to the Chicago Steel. Holloway has already verbally committed to the University of Wisconsin so this seems like a fairly likely landing spot considering it would allow him to retain his NCAA eligibility.

Forward Ryan Robinson of Plano, Texas, a seventh-round bantam pick by Everett last year, was taken in the second round and 28th overall by the Muskegon (Mich.) Lumberjacks.

The second phase includes all hockey players with junior eligibility not on protected lists of other USHL teams. Everett goalie Mario Petit, an Ile-Des-Chenes, Manitoba native who spent two years backing up Carter Hart, went in the 13th round (211th overall) to the Sioux City Musketeers who are coached by former Tips assistant Jay Varady.
