Tuesday prep roundup: Glacier Peak, Mariner soccer teams move on

SHORELINE — The Glacier Peak and Mariner boys soccer teams came away with decisive wins in their 4A District 1 tournament semifinal games Tuesday night, setting up a title game between the two Wesco soccer powers.

Mariner’s Luiz Zuniga scored twice, leading the Marauders to a 5-0 win over Kamiak, which had beaten Mariner during the teams’ previous two meetings, and Danny Guerrero registered two second-half goals to lead Glacier Peak to a 4-1 win over Mount Vernon.

Brian Castenada recorded the shutout for Mariner, and Keegan Rubio had a goal and an assist for the Grizzlies.

The Marauders will play Glacier Peak for the tournament championship at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Lake Stevens.

BASEBALL

Ferndale 4, Stanwood 1

STANWOOD — Stanwood saw its season come to an end in a 3A District 1 tournament consolation contest.

Ferndale will play host Arlington on Wednesday in a winner-to-state, loser-out contest.

Marysville Pilchuck 5, Lynnwood 3

MARYSVILLE — Marysville Pilchuck kept it season alive, beating Lynnwood in a 3A District 1 tournament consolation game.

The Tomahawks will play host Snohomish on Wednesday in a winner-to-state, loser-out contest. The Royals’ season is over.

BOYS SOCCER

Shorewood 3, Arlington 1

SHORELINE — The Thunderbirds withstood an Arlington goal in the opening minute, scoring three times off set plays in the second half to eliminate the Eagles in the 3A District 1 tournament.

Chris Gerbino’s long throw-in led to a goal by Ilya Panek to tie the game for Shorewood (8-8-2), which then added a pair of goals from freshman Ben Grant to book passage into the next round.

The Thunderbirds will face Squalicum at 7 p.m. Thursday at Shoreline Stadium.

“Set plays are our M.O. That’s how we score,” Shorewood coach Gary Harris said.

Stephen Caponey scored for Arlington, which saw its season end at 6-12-1.

“It was never really on for us tonight,” Arlington coach Mike Gudgeon said. “We never really connected, and in the postseason a night like that is all teams need.”

Edmonds-Woodway 2, Marysville Pilchuck 1

EDMONDS — Edmonds-Woodway edged Marysville Pilchuck in a 3A District 1 loser-out consolation game.

The Warriors will play Shorecrest/Snohomish on Thursday in another consolation contest.

SOFTBALL

Meadowdale 4, Mountlake Terrace 2

MOUNTLAKE TERRACE — Savanna Spratt hit a home run and Lauren Dent registered nine strikeouts to lead Meadowdale to a win and a share of the Wesco 3A South title.

The Mavericks and Hawks finished the regular season with identical 14-3 conference records.

Jazz Zenk hit a home run for Mountlake Terrace.
