Charlie Noble

Scuttlebutt Brewing, Everett

Style: Summer-style IPA

Stats: 4.6 percent ABV, 53 IBU

Available: Six packs of 12-ounce bottles, 22-ounce bottles at the brewery, taproom, in stores and bottleshops; on tap at the brewery and taproom.

My thoughts: Scuttlebutt’s newest seasonal offering is a summer-style, low-ABV IPA that is perfect for the hot summer weather.

Just don’t call it a session beer. Scuttlebutt head brewer Matt Stromberg joked that calling low-ABV beers session beers is out. So Stromberg and others are referring to Charlie Noble as a summer-style IPA.

Whatever one calls it, though, the beer is perfect for summer. Finished with Eukenot, Mosaic and Citra hops, the summer-style IPA (see, I got the memo) is crisp and light, with a slight, tropical hop finish. It’s hot out, so put away those big double IPAs and have two Charlie Nobles, or Chucks, as Scuttlebutt has already taken to calling it.

Charlie Noble will be pouring Saturday as Scuttlebutt’s taproom hosts Everett Music Initiative’s 5th Birthday Party. There will be live music from Motopony, Belgian Fog, Bod, Nail Houses and Steel Beans, plus a food truck.

It will be the fifth time that Scuttlebutt and EMI have teamed up. Last February, Scuttlebutt hosted EMI’s Fisherman’s Village lineup release party with a number of acts playing in the large production brewery. Stromberg said the acoustics of the brewery were surprisingly good.

Scuttlebutt has a number of new beers on the horizon, including Rewind, an imperial version of the brewery’s Transistor IPA. Rewind will be pouring at Saturday’s event.

Stromberg said Scuttlebutt is brewing an India Pale Lager for its official 21st anniversary beer in July, and will be collaborating with Mukilteo’s Diamond Knot Brewing on another Thai-inspired beer for this year’s Collaboration Festival.

Last year they brewed Thai Me Up, a lager infused with lemongrass and galangal root, but this year they’ll turn that on its head and brew Thai Me Down, which will have Thai-inspired infusions but be a dark beer. Look for that beer in August.

From the brewery: The term “Charlie Noble” refers to the cooking smokestack on a ship. It came to be titled for a British merchant captain who, upon learning that his cooking smokestack was made of copper, demanded his crew keep the stack bright and polished. We named the beer Charlie Noble because this refreshing IPA is a perfect complement to breakfast, lunch or dinner.

More new releases

Purple People Eater and Armed Love, Decibel Brewing: Two new summer beers from this Bothell brewery. Named after the Sheb Wooley song, Purple People Eater is a blackberry sour that is tart and fruity with a deep purple hue. Armed Love, named for the “International Noise Conspiracy” album, is a spiced wheat beer fermented with a saison yeast strain and spiced with fresh lemon and orange zest. Fruity and refreshing. Both on tap at the brewery. Also find Armed Love at the Washington Brewer’s Festival.

Blowin’ Cool, Skookum Brewery: Brewed with flaked rye and hopped with Citra, Eureka, Mandarina and Australian hops Ella, this IPA is not shy. Available on tap at the brewery.
