YOKOSUKA, JAPAN — Ensign Alvin Abes, a 2012 Arlington High School graduate, serves in the U.S. Navy aboard the guided missile cruiser, USS Antietam.
Abes is an electronic warfare officer aboard the forward-deployed Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruiser operating out of Yokosuka, Japan. Antietam is one of three cruisers forward-deployed in Yokosuka.
A Navy electronic warfare officer is responsible for ensuring that the early warning radar on the ship is operational, according to a U.S. Navy profile of Abes.
“I learned the value of hard work from growing up as a child, which carries over to my Navy career every day,” said Abes.
Abes’ father was in the Navy for 20 years as a gas turbine systems technician.
“He was one of the driving factors why I joined the Navy because I saw that joining the Navy helped him and decided I would like to do the same,” Abes said.
