Snohomish cancer awareness night to honor late teacher, coach

Snohomish High School is holding a cancer awareness night during Tuesday’s girls basketball game against Glacier Peak in honor of Russ Roberts, a longtime former Snohomish teacher and coach who died this summer from prostate cancer.
The Dec. 19 event includes halftime activities and will raise money for the Washington State Prostate Cancer Coalition. The game tips off at 7:15 p.m. at Snohomish High School. All attendees are encouraged to wear baby blue.
Russ, the father of Snohomish girls basketball coach Ken Roberts, spent three decades teaching and coaching in the Snohomish School District.
Russ taught history at Snohomish High School from 1967 to 1982, and then was a physical education teacher and athletic coordinator at Valley View Middle School from 1982 to 1997. During his career, he coached boys varsity soccer, boys and girls varsity golf, junior-varsity tennis, freshman football, junior-high basketball and junior-high volleyball.
All three of Russ’ children are currently teaching in Snohomish County.
