The Monroe football team made program history this season by earning its first-ever state-playoff victory and reaching the Class 4A state quarterfinals.
Three senior standouts who were instrumental to the Bearcats’ historic season were honored Friday with Associated Press 4A all-state recognition.
Monroe running back Isaiah Lewis, The Herald’s Offensive Player of the Year, was selected to the 4A all-state team after rushing for a school-record 2,064 yards and 25 touchdowns. He averaged 7.8 yards per carry and also had 412 yards receiving and three touchdown catches.
Monroe two-way standout Josh Jerome, who signed earlier this week to play football at Eastern Washington University, was selected as an all-state offensive lineman. Jerome helped pave the way for Lewis and a high-powered Bearcats rushing attack that totaled nearly 2,800 yards and 36 touchdowns.
Monroe linebacker Ricky Baker received all-state honors after recording 151 tackles, eight sacks, two interceptions and a forced fumble. He anchored a defense that allowed less than 20 points per game.
Lake Stevens senior defensive lineman Mathew Sevao, The Herald’s Defensive Player of the Year, also received 4A all-state honors. Sevao broke his own school record this season with 17 sacks and made a team-high 118 tackles. He also recorded two forced fumbles, a safety and a blocked punt while keying a defense that yielded just 13.5 points per game.
Glacier Peak senior Heston Pettis was named to the 4A all-state team as a punter.
Edmonds-Woodway senior defensive lineman Tyler McAtee, Arlington senior linebacker Payton Bastien and Oak Harbor junior defensive back Dorian Hardin each received 3A all-state honors.
McAtee recorded 11.5 sacks and 41 tackles, helping anchor a Warriors defense that allowed less than 14 points per game.
Bastien had 160 tackles, six sacks, two forced fumbles and an interception.
Hardin intercepted seven passes and helped key a Wildcats defense that yielded less than 16 points per game.
Archbishop Murphy had four 2A all-state selections, highlighted by two-way standout senior Kyler Gordon.
Gordon, a highly regarded four-star prospect who announced Thursday night on KING 5 that he has signed with the University of Washington, received 2A all-state honors as both a defensive back and an all-purpose player.
Gordon, ranked by 247Sports as the top senior recruit in the state, intercepted five passes and returned one for a touchdown. He also forced three fumbles and helped key a Wildcats defense that allowed less than 12 points per game.
Gordon totaled 1,366 yards and 17 touchdowns on offense, averaging 19 yards per touch. He had 837 yards receiving and 10 touchdown catches, and rushed for 529 yards and seven scores.
Senior running back Ray Pimentel, senior offensive lineman Martin Napeahi and senior linebacker Ben Hines also received all-state honors for 2A state semifinalist Archbishop Murphy.
Pimentel rushed for 2,082 yards and 28 touchdowns, averaging 10.1 yards per carry. Napeahi played center for the Wildcats and helped pave the way for a rushing attack that totaled 3,200 yards and 46 touchdowns.
Hines recorded 118 tackles and four sacks. He also forced four fumbles, returning one for a touchdown.
Mountlake Terrace junior Brandon Bach received 2A all-state honors as a punter. He pinned 11 of 40 punts inside the 20-yard line and finished with a net average of 33.4 yards per punt, including a season-long of 60 yards.
King’s senior defensive lineman Taylor Schoenfeld was a 1A all-state selection. Schoenfeld recorded 35.5 tackles and three sacks in seven games.
The overall state player of the year was O’Dea senior running back Jamyn Patu, who rushed for 2,208 yards and 28 touchdowns while leading the Fighting Irish to the 3A state title.
Patu also shared the 3A player of the year honor with Garfield senior receiver and all-purpose standout Tre’Shaun Harrison.
Other players of the year for their respective classifications were: Richland senior defensive back and all-purpose standout Adam Weissenfels (4A), Hockinson senior quarterback Canon Racanelli (2A), Meridian senior quarterback Simon Burkett (1A), Kalama junior quarterback Alex Dyer (2B) and Almira/Coulee-Hartline junior quarterback Maguire Isaak (1B).
