Kamiak’s historic run ends in consolation loss to Skyview

TACOMA — The Kamiak boys basketball team’s historic postseason run came to an end with a 64-56 loss to No. 2-seeded Skyview in a Class 4A Hardwood Classic consolation game Friday at the Tacoma Dome.

Senior post Samaad Hector led Skyview (25-5) with 26 points and 17 rebounds, scoring most of his baskets on putbacks at the rim.

Hector, whose game-winning tip-in lifted the Storm over Glacier Peak in Wednesday’s opening round, netted 12 third-quarter points to help stretch Skyview’s two-point halftime lead to double digits.

Alex Schumacher added 19 points for the Storm, who advance to Saturday’s fourth/sixth-place game.

Kamiak (17-10) was led by senior guard Carson Tuttle, who scored 12 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter. Seniors Daniel Sharpe and Patrick Olson each added 11 points for the 14th-seeded Knights.

After starting the season 6-7, Kamiak won 11 of its next 12 games to capture the 4A Northwest District title and reach the state quarterfinals for the first time in the school’s 25-year history. The Knights upset third-seeded Union in Wednesday’s opening round before falling to fourth-seeded Richland in Thursday’s quarterfinals.

“They’ve accomplished a lot,” Kamiak coach Cory West said of his senior-laden squad, which reached the state regionals each of the past three seasons.

“They’ve gotten our program to where this is the standard. … And to end up down here (in the Hardwood Classic), I think they can walk out with their heads held high.”
