What: Reminiscent of a strawberry plant in both flower and foliage — but with bright yellow flowers — Waldsteinia ternata is a spreading perennial that will form a low, tight-knit groundcover over time. The mature foliage is dark green and quite strawberry-like while the fruits of this plant are just the opposite; hence, the common name barren strawberry. Nevertheless, this is a very fine choice for a groundcover in sun or shade.

Where: Barren strawberry will grow well in full sun or light to dappled shade. For optimal growth plant in rich, well-drained soil; however, it will tolerate clay and sandy situations as well as moist situations.

Size: This low-growing plant matures at 6 inches tall and spreads about 5 feet.

Care: Water regularly or occasionally depending on soil type.
