Marysville Pilchuck grad to start at QB for Oregon State

Marysville Pilchuck High School graduate Jake Luton has been named the starting quarterback for the Oregon State Beavers.

OSU’s first-year head football coach, Jonathan Smith, made the announcement Monday. Oregon State opens its season Saturday at No. 5 Ohio State.

“What separated Jake really was the last three, four practices,” Smith told the Corvallis Gazette-Times. “He did really well in the scrimmages. It’s not always the highlight plays that stand out (but) some of those plays that you just avoid the negatives.”

Luton, a redshirt senior, was the Beavers’ starting quarterback last year, but suffered a serious spinal injury in the fourth game of the season and missed the rest of the year.

Here’s a story by The Herald’s Nick Patterson on what Luton had to overcome to regain the starting job.
