Three takeaways: Riley Sutter’s big night helps Everett Silvertips survive at Tri-City

The Silvertips handed the Americans their first loss of the season on Saturday. With Spokane defeating Kootenay 6-3 in its home opener and Portland handing Seattle a 3-2 loss, the Thunderbirds’ first of the season, there is now a four-way tie in the U.S. division, with Spokane, Seattle, Tri-City and Portland deadlocked at four points.
1. Sutter’s celebration: After signing his entry-level contract with the Capitals on Saturday, the Riley Sutter celebrated in style, as the Silvertips’ captain scored two goals in a three-point night. As the lone true centerman on the Silvertips’ roster, Sutter’s presence over Everett’s first three games of the season has been less pronounced, but impactful nonetheless.
2. Wylie quietly having productive offensive season: 1999-born defenseman Wyatte Wylie added two assists on Saturday, pushing his season-total to five over two games. The Flyers prospect will be a key component of the Silvertips’ offense and power-play this season.
3. A sloppy win: The offensive eruption propelled Everett to a statement 3-2 win at Tri-City, the the Silvertips first road victory this season, but it didn’t come without hiccups. Particularly, the Silvertips struggled to stay out of the box, committing nine penalties and gifting the Americans two 5-on-3 advantages in the second period. It’s uncharacteristic for Williams’ Silvertips, which were shorthanded 226 times, the second least in the WHL last season. Everett killed 7-of-9 penalties, though, securing the victory.
Also notable
Forwards Reece Vitelli and Luke Ormsby returned to the Everett lineup on Saturday, providing Everett with a much needed boost of depth up front. Dawson Butt is eligible to return next Friday against Seattle after serving the last game of a three-game suspension on Saturday.
