Silvertips smash Thunderbirds on Teddy Bear Toss night

EVERETT — The Everett Silvertips went into the Western Hockey League’s Christmas Break on a positive note, stomping the Seattle Thunderbirds, 6-1, on Saturday in front of a crowd of 8,133 at Angel of the Winds Arena for Teddy Bear Toss night.

“I thought overall it was a good 60 minutes of hockey,” head coach Dennis Williams said.

Martin Fasko-Rudas prompted the teddy bears to rain down onto the ice with his goal 7:57 into the game. The import forward stuck with the play and forced a rebound off Seattle goaltender Cole Schwebius’ skate and in.

“It was a classic kind of Fasko goal,” Williams said.

Bryce Kindopp potted his 19th goal of the season at the 8:42 mark of the period to put Everett up 2-0. The 19-year-old forward has scored six goals in his past four games.

Gianni Fairbrother’s snapshot from the blueline whizzed past Schwebius for his fourth goal of the season with 4:57 remaining to put the Silvertips up the three, and Riley Sutter deflected a shot from Fasko-Rudas into the back of the net just 1:17 later to extend the lead to four.

“I tried to get it on net,” Sutter said. “I saw the goalie went down and knew he wasn’t a very big guy, so I knew the top of the net was going to be open. I’m just lucky it went of his back.

Jackson Berezowski sniped a shot over Schwebius’ glove to put Everett up five in the second.

Jaxan Kaluski spoiled Dustin Wolf’s shutout by roofing one past the Everett netminder in the third period. Sutter potted his second goal of the game by wrapping around the net and ricocheting a backhanded shot off Schwebius’ shoulder to extend the lead back to five.

Wolf stopped 21 shots for Everett.

Everett will go into the break with the Western Conference’s best record at 27-7-1-1 (56 points).
