MONROE — Four horses died in a barn fire early Thursday.

Firefighters were called around 2 a.m. to the barn and arena engulfed in flames in the 13400 block of Chain Lake Road in Monroe. They were able to open stalls for two horses to escape, said Heather Chadwick, a spokeswoman for Snohomish County Fire District 7.

The roof collapsed, and the barn is considered a total loss. No people were injured.

Later in the morning while firefighters were hitting hot spots they confirmed the number of horses that died.

The fire marshal was investigating the cause.
