SEATTLE — A Tulalip man was sentenced Thursday to nearly six years in prison for domestic violence.

Morgan Bryant, a 36-year-old tribal member, pleaded guilty in December to multiple counts of assault.

The hearings were held in U.S. District Court in Seattle, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Bryant assaulted his live-in partner on numerous occasions, prosecutors said. The violence included punching, kicking, choking and also striking her with a hammer and a wrench.

The victim suffered broken bones in her wrist, ribs and face.

“He cannot do this ever again to any woman,” Judge Robert Lasnik said.

The woman sought help from family and friends in March 2018, and Tulalip Tribal Police went to the home, where they found her severely injured. She was taken to the hospital and later described surviving months of abuse.

“Such violent, vicious assaults deserve significant federal prison time,” U.S. Attorney Brian T. Moran said in the release. “The tribal liaisons in my office are using important tools such as the Habitual Offender Domestic Assault statute to ensure domestic violence assaults are investigated, prosecuted and punished to protect the vulnerable in our tribal communities.”

The case was investigated by tribal police and the FBI. Bryant had previous convictions in Everett Municipal Court and Tulalip Tribal Court for domestic violence assaults on other victims.
