Adventure Speaker Series: “Hangdog Days” talk by Jeff Smoot, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. April 9, Marysville Opera House, 1225 Third St., Marysville. Smoot’s book, “Hangdog Days: Conflict, Change and the Race for 5.14,” recounts an era when rock climbing exploded in popularity and how a new generation of climbers has changed the culture of the sport. Hiking in the Pacific Northwest: The “Pacific Northwest Hiking Basics” class is at 6 p.m. April 11 at Alderwood REI, 3000 184th St. SW, Suite 952, Lynnwood. The free class will cover how to explore the best trails in the region, how to plan a hike, navigating permitting and the potential challenges and rewards that come with each particular destination. Cougar talk: The “Cougars” presentation is at 7 p.m. April 18 at the Northwest Stream Center in McCollum Park, 600-128th St. SE, Everett. Brian Kertson, cougar scientist for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, will talk about how to identify cougar signs in the woods, their ecology, behavior and how to co-exist with them. Free park-ing: The next day to visit Washington State Parks without an entrance fee is on April 20, Spring Day. Other free days are April 22 (Earth Day), June 1 (National Trails Day), June 8 (National Get Outdoors Day), June 9 (Fishing Day), Aug. 25 (National Park Service’s birthday), Nov. 11 (Veterans Day) and Nov. 29 (Autumn free day). Sea kayaking: Paddle from Cornet Bay to Skagit and Hope islands April 27 with the Everett Sea Kayaking Committee. The 12-mile journey, beginning at the Corney Bay boat launch at W. Cornet Bay Road, Oak Harbor, will have a moderate pace. A Basic Sea Kayaking Course badge is required. Space is limited. More at www.themountaineers.org.
Sno-Park permits: Attention snow enthusiasts: Washington State Parks Winter Recreation Program’s Sno-Park permits are available for purchase online and at various vendors statewide through April 30. The permits allow visitors to park in cleared, designated parking lots with access to areas around the state for skiing, snowmobiling, dog sledding, snowshoeing, tubing and other winter fun.
