Four prep sports events to keep an eye on this week:
Girls basketball: Snohomish at Meadowdale, 7:15 p.m. Tuesday. Both teams figure to be contenders in Wesco 3A/2A, with Snohomish picked third in the league’s preseason coaches poll and Meadowdale picked fourth. The Panthers are coming off a fourth-place state finish. The Mavericks return their top five scorers from a team that made an underdog run to the state regionals.
Boys swimming: Kamiak vs. Edmonds-Woodway and Mountlake Terrace, 3 p.m. Thursday at Lynnwood Pool. This Wesco South meet features a showdown of defending district champions. Perennial power Kamiak is coming off back-to-back Wesco South and 4A Northwest District titles, and Edmonds-Woodway claimed the 3A Northwest District crown last season.
Girls basketball: Arlington at Shorecrest, 7:15 p.m. Friday. It’s just the first week of league play, but this matchup could factor significantly in the Wesco 3A/2A title race. Defending conference co-champion Arlington received nine of 10 first-place votes in the league’s preseason coaches poll, while Shorecrest received the other first-place vote and was picked to finish second. Shorecrest is off to a 4-0 start and Arlington is 4-1, with its only loss being a three-point defeat to Wesco 4A contender Lake Stevens.
Boys basketball: Edmonds-Woodway at Marysville Pilchuck, 7:15 p.m. Saturday. Wesco 3A/2A favorite Marysville Pilchuck faces league contender Edmonds-Woodway in a rematch of last year’s dramatic contest, which the Tomahawks won on a buzzer-beater by the since-graduated RaeQuan Battle. E-W standout Mutdung Bol scored 25 points in that loss and has averaged better than 20 points in his first three games this season.
