Prep notebook: Cascade girls bowling takes 4th in state

The Cascade High School girls bowling team took fourth place at the Class 4A state championships Saturday in University Place to cap coach Ron Hicks’ four-decade coaching tenure.

The Bruins finished fourth out of eight teams with a total score of 6,730 pins. Cascade senior Jessie Brambach led the way with a sixth-place individual finish, posting a six-game 1,094 series.

It was the eighth top-five state finish for the Bruins since 1999, when bowling transitioned from a club sport to a varsity sport. Hicks is stepping down after 40 seasons as Cascade’s bowling coach.

Darrington boys clinch share of league title

The Darrington boys basketball team has clinched at least a share of the Northwest 2B/1B League title. The Loggers can claim the conference crown outright with a win over La Conner in Tuesday night’s regular-season finale.

Darrington (15-4, 7-2 Northwest 2B/1B) holds a one-game lead over second-place Friday Harbor in the league standings, with one conference game remaining for both teams. Darrington and Friday Harbor split their regular-season series.

It’s been a massive turnaround for the Loggers over the past two seasons. Prior to last year’s 15-win campaign, Darrington hadn’t won more than four games in a season since 2008-09.

Grace Academy girls claim 2nd straight league crown

The Grace Academy girls basketball team earned its second consecutive Northwest 1B League title. The Eagles (15-4, 10-2 Northwest 1B) finished tied atop the league standings with Lummi Nation, but swept the Blackhawks in their two regular-season matchups.

Local wrestling teams win sub-regional titles

The Lake Stevens boys wrestling team cruised to the 4A District 1 sub-regional crown, finishing with 467 points and more than doubling the score of second-place Glacier Peak.

The Snohomish boys claimed the 3A District 1 North sub-regional title with 285 points. The Panthers finished 39.5 points ahead of runner-up Stanwood.

The Edmonds-Woodway boys rolled to the 3A District 1/2 South sub-regional crown with 262 points, finishing 63 points ahead of second-place Shorewood.

The Everett girls took first place in a sub-regional at Chief Sealth High School with 152 points, edging runner-up Chief Sealth by 14 points.
