The Athlete of the Week nominees for Dec. 27-Jan. 2. Voting closes at midnight Sunday. The winner will be announced with the next poll and in next Tuesday’s paper. Each weekly winner will be included in an Athlete of the Month poll.

Last week’s winner

Jailin Johnson | Mariner | Boys Basketball

Johnson, a junior, netted a game-high 28 points as the Marauders fell 73-61 against Class 2A powerhouse Lynden on Dec. 22. He added 10 points in Mariner’s 92-40 rout of Marysville Pilchuck on Dec. 23. He won the Athlete of the Week voting for the week of Dec. 20-26 by claiming 1,417 (46.9%) of 3,022 votes.

This week’s nominees

Gia Powell | Meadowdale | Girls Basketball

Powell, a sophomore, led Meadowdale with 11 points in a 43-39 victory over King’s on Dec. 29. She also scored a game-high 16 points as the Mavericks fell to Wesco 4A favorite Lake Stevens on Dec. 28.

Kye Taylor | Lake Stevens | Boys Basketball

Taylor, a senior, scored all 13 of his points in the second half as Lake Stevens outlasted North Creek for a down-to-the-wire 60-57 non-league win on Dec. 29.

Isaiah White | Everett | Boys Basketball

White, a sophomore, scored 18 points and pulled down seven rebounds in Everett’s 61-51 loss to Dimond (Anchorage, Alaska). He also chipped in 13 points in a loss to 1A powerhouse King’s on Dec. 29.

Cori Wilcox | Lake Stevens | Girls Basketball

Wilcox, a senior, poured in 20 points in Lake Stevens’ 66-36 win over Auburn on Dec. 31.
