Below are the candidates for The Herald’s Prep Athlete of the Month for December. They were the winners of the five athlete-of-the-week polls during the month. The balloting for the athlete of the month closes at midnight Sunday. The winner will be featured in a future edition of The Herald.

Jailin Johnson | Mariner | Boys Basketball

Johnson, a junior, netted a game-high 28 points as the Marauders fell 73-61 against Class 2A powerhouse Lynden on Dec. 22. He added 10 points in Mariner’s 92-40 rout of Marysville Pilchuck on Dec. 23. He won the Athlete of the Week voting for the week of Dec. 20-26 by claiming 1,417 (46.9%) of 3,022 votes.

Naser Motley | Mariner | Boys Basketball

Motley, a senior, netted a game-high 27 points as the Marauders topped Edmonds-Woodway 72-58 on Dec. 7. He also led Mariner with 16 points in a 62-48 win over Cedar Park Christian on Dec. 9. He won the Athlete of the Week voting for Dec. 6-12 by claiming 301 (30.3%) of 995 votes.

Mya Sheffield | Mountlake Terrace | Girls Basketball

Sheffield, a junior, hit a game-winning 3-pointer in the final seconds as the Hawks edged Edmonds School District rival Meadowdale 44-42 on Dec. 17. Sheffield scored all 17 of her points in the second half. She won The Herald’s Athlete of the Week for Dec. 13-19 by claiming 249 (31.1%) of 801 votes.

Isaiah White | Everett | Boys Basketball

White, a sophomore, scored 18 points and pulled down seven rebounds in Everett’s 61-51 loss to Dimond (Anchorage, Alaska). He also chipped in 13 points in a loss to 1A powerhouse King’s on Dec. 29. He won the Athlete of the Week voting for the week of Dec. 27-Jan.2 by claiming 887 (45.1%) of 1,966 votes.

Sylas Williams | Jackson | Boys Basketball

Williams, a junior, poured in 23 points and pulled down 22 rebounds in the Timberwolves’ 54-42 victory over Meadowdale on Dec. 3. He recorded another double-double the following day with 19 points and 10 rebounds in a 79-70 win over Burlington-Edison. He won The Herald’s Athlete of the Week for Nov. 30-Dec. 5 by claiming 638 (35.3%) of 1,808 votes.
