Our laws should be based on good standards, including Bible

It is thought provoking to read views set forth on this editorial page. Most are written by people who believe what they write, but it’s easy to become bewildered by the array of “answers” presented. My concern is that often these views are presented as truth.

Now, I’m thankful that we all have different viewpoints, but for the really important things in life there has to be a standard that we all go by. I believe (and I realize many don’t) that God gave us that standard (the Bible) to live by. More scientists every year agree that our world has a designer who created it and science continues to open up our understanding of the world we live in, but science cannot give us purpose, meaning, love or hope. If that is true then wouldn’t it make sense to follow the Designer’s directions?

If we make up our own standards then how do we know what is really right or wrong? Unfortunately, we live in a world where many don’t want to follow any directions. We live in an age in which our liberty is defined as absolute free choice. Everywhere you look we see groups that gather around ideologies of race, sexual orientation, politics etc. Often there is no standard … no God … and therefore no morality. When we do reject God we simply put something else in His place. Our technology has advanced beyond imagination, but where is our human dignity, our ethics and culture?

In a recent article by Tom Burke he presents many reasons why we should not allow Christianity to shape our worldview or impose Christian values on our nation (“Old time religion fine, but keep it, goverment apart,” The Herald, Jan. 17). The Constitution writers wanted to keep us from having a “state” dictate religion while also giving us the freedom to choose, but they had no intention of building a “wall” between church and state. That kind of wall would keep us from honoring the faith that built this nation and would keep us from teaching what is possibly the most important motive for human behavior … what we believe about God, His guidelines for us and the meaning of our lives.

We humans will create a culture of one kind or another. Let’s be really careful which standard we follow. It’s never too late to change.
