Show the Supreme Court nominee some respect, please

I read a recent letter asking “Is Biden’s pick for Supreme Court the best available?” The writer felt that President Biden is choosing nominees for his cabinet and the court based on their identities as minorities. I have two objections to offer.

First, every president makes selections based on political calculations. Biden won, so he’s trying to reward his supporters and to reassure the hesitant. He’s barely competent in his role as POTUS, but he knows how to play the game.

Second, the writer asks (in relation to Ketanji Brown Jackson), “Do cows vote?” The implication seems to be that nominating Brown Jackson will appeal to Black women … who are equated to cows. How in the world does this help advance civil discourse in our country? Let’s offer the nominee (or anyone else) a modicum of respect.

The leaders of the two major parties in the U.S. continue to beclown themselves (to borrow a verb from Bryan Suits). Let’s be better than them.
