Marysville troupe gives the Bard a postmodern interpretation

Red Curtain Foundation for the Arts is offering a new vision for Shakespeare’s “As You Like It” — the show’s setting moves from the forest to an abandoned shopping mall in the dystopian present.

The play will be performed March 11-27 at the Red Curtain Arts Center, 9315 State Ave. #J, Marysville.

This rendition of “As You Like It” takes place not long after a period of great upheaval in which the public’s health and well-being are under siege, and vital services and infrastructure have collapsed.

The play follows its heroine, Rosalind (Kris Hambrick), as she flees persecution in the court of Duke Frederick (Jonathan Olson), accompanied by her cousin Celia (Sydney Kaser), and finds safety and, eventually, love, in the Forest of Arden Mall. In the abandoned mall, they encounter a variety of memorable characters, notably the melancholy Jaques (Garrison Whaley-Sharp), who delivers many of Shakespeare’s most famous speeches.

The play is directed by Joe Goins and features a cast of 16 local actors. Goins, a talented musician and songwriter, provides an undercurrent of thematic melodies throughout the play from a perch onstage.

Performances are 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets are $22 for adults, and $18 for seniors (62 and older), students and military personnel. Tickets are available online at redcurtainfoundation.org, at the box office by calling 360-322-7402, and at the arts center from 2-6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

Proof of COVID vaccination is required for entry, and masks are also required.
