Why was race of Black candidates mentioned in GOP poll?

I recently answered a political poll by the Reagan Fund, a Republican state legislative committee’s soft-money poll. It targeted the three Black candidates running for office in the 44th Legislative district, and it was clearly racist.
At first it sounded like a typical political poll, until it asked questions identifying the candidates by their race. These questions asked, would you be more or less likely to vote for this African-American candidate, who voted for such and such.
The white candidates in the poll were only identified by their personal profile.
I find this type of poll very disturbing, and should never be repeated.
