The Athlete of the Week nominees for May 9-15. Voting closes at midnight Sunday. The winner will be announced with the next poll and in next Tuesday’s paper.

Kyleigh Lynn | Lake Stevens | Softball

Lynn, a senior, tossed a two-hit shutout and also hit a home run as Lake Stevens topped previously unbeaten Jackson 7-0 on May 4. Lynn won The Herald’s Athlete of the Week voting for May 2-8 by claiming 480 (26.9%) of 1,785 votes.

This week’s nominees

Brooke Asper | Marysville Pilchuck | Girls Tennis

Asper, a sophomore, defeated Arlington’s Mackenzie Caple 6-1, 6-3 to claim the Wesco 3A North singles title on May 11. Asper went 4-0 overall in the two-day tournament and pulled out a tight 7-6(8), 4-6, 6-2 win in the semifinals over Stanwood’s Audrey Medina.

Conrad Chisman | Stanwood | Boys Golf

Chisman, a sophomore, fired an 8-under 64 for a first-place finish at the Wesco North Championships at Snohomish Golf Course on May 9.

Mason Goodson | Stanwood | Baseball

Goodson, a junior, threw a no-hitter in Stanwood’s 2-1 win over Oak Harbor in a loser-out district tournament game on May 10. He also struck out 11 over 5.2 innings and delivered a two-out, two-run single with the bases loaded as the Spartans clinched a state tournament berth with a 6-4 win over Meadowdale on May 14.

Trayce Hanks | Lake Stevens | Boys Track & Field

Hanks, a senior, on the 100, 200 and 400 meters at the Wesco 4A Championships at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Snohomish. Hanks posted personal bests of 11.10 seconds in the 100 and 22.55 seconds in the 200. He ran the 400, which he set Class 4A’s top time in last month according to athletic.net, in 49.26 seconds. Hanks also helped the Lake Stevens 4×100 relay team to a winning time of 42.57 seconds, which ranks second in 4A.

Ben Hanson | Edmonds-Woodway | Boys Soccer

Hanson, a junior, scored the go-ahead goal in the 78th minute and put the game away with an insurance goal just moments later as Edmonds-Woodway rallied for a 4-2 win over Arlington on May 14 to clinch a Class 3A state tournament berth.

Heaven Kim | Kamiak | Girls Golf

Kim, a sophomore, shot a 10-over 82 for a first-place finish at the Wesco 4A Championships at Walter Hall Golf Course on May 12.

Kelsey Nichols | Snohomish | Girls Track & Field

Nichols, a sophomore, won the long jump, high jump and triple jump at the Wesco 3A North Championships at Arlington High School. Nichols posted marks of 4 feet, 11 inches in the high jump, 16 feet, 1.5 inches in the long jump and a personal-best 36 feet, 3 inches in the triple jump.

Allie Thomsen | Jackson | Softball

Thomsen, a freshman, hit the game-tying two-run home run, came on in relief to escape a tense seventh-inning jam and drove in the game’s deciding run in the eighth inning as Jackson beat Glacier Peak 5-3 to secure an outright Wesco 4A title on May 11.
