Brooke Asper | Marysville Pilchuck | Girls Tennis

Asper, a sophomore, defeated Arlington’s Mackenzie Caple 6-1, 6-3 to claim the Wesco 3A North singles title on May 11. She went 4-0 overall in the two-day tournament and pulled out a tight 7-6(8), 4-6, 6-2 win in the semifinals over Stanwood’s Audrey Medina. Asper won The Herald’s Athlete of the Week voting for May 9-15 by claiming 501 (33.5%) of 1,497 votes.

This week’s nominees

Ashlyee Bloch | Cascade | Softball

Bloch, a junior, blasted a walk-off grand slam to help Cascade clinch a state tournament berth in a 14-12 victory over Arlington in the Class 3A District 1 tournament semifinals on May 17. She finished the game 2-for-5 with five RBI. Bloch added a three-run double and a solo home run in the Bruins’ 14-7 win over Snohomish in the district title game on May 19.

Ben Borgida | Shorewood | Boys Golf

Borgida, a senior, shot a 3-under 139 and held off Stanwood’s Conrad Chisman in a sudden-death playoff to win the Class 3A District 1 tournament at Snohomish Golf Course on May 17.

Charlotte Giffin | Cedarcrest | Girls Golf

Giffin, a junior, fired a 5-over 149 for a first-place finish at the Class 2A District 1 tournament at Snohomish Golf Course on May 18. Giffin helped lead the Red Wolves to a team title.

Jamaari Jefferson | Marysville Pilchuck | Boys Track & Field

Jefferson, a senior, won the long jump and the triple jump at the Class 3A District 1 Championships. Jefferson posted personal bests of 22 feet, 8 inches in the long jump and 44 feet, 4.5 inches in the triple jump. He also helped the Tomahawks’ 4×100 relay team to a winning time of 42.95 seconds.

Chloe Lee | Kamiak | Girls Tennis

Lee, a junior, pulled out a pair of three-set victories on her to winning the Class 4A District 1 tournament singles title on May 18. Lee came back to beat Jackson’s Shubhi Handa 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the championship match.

Chloe Pattison | Lake Stevens | Girls Track & Field

Pattison, a senior, ran winning times in the 100- and 300-meter hurdles at the Class 4A Wesco-Kingco Bi-District Championships. Pattison finished the 100 hurdles in 14.96 seconds and the 300 hurdles in 44.55 seconds.

Koll Pehlivanian | Kamiak | Boys Soccer

Pehlivanian, a junior, scored both of Kamiak’s goals in a 5-2 loss to Skyline in the Class 4A state quarterfinals on May 21. He also assisted on the game-winning goal as Kamiak knocked off Union 1-0 on May 18.
