The Athlete of the Week nominees for Oct. 10-16. Voting closes at midnight Sunday. The winner will be announced with next week’s poll and in Tuesday, Oct. 25’s paper.

Paige Gessey | Lynnwood | Volleyball

Gessey, a junior, had a team-high nine kills to go with three blocks and four digs as Lynnwood swept Shorecrest in a battle of Wesco 3A/2A contenders on Oct. 4. She added eight kills, two aces and one block in the Royals’ sweep of Cascade on Oct. 6. Gessey won The Herald’s Athlete of the Week voting for Oct. 3-9 by claiming 845 (43.2%) of 1.957 votes.

This week’s nominees

Alyssa Armstrong | Marysville Pilchuck | Cross Country

Armstrong, a freshman, finished first in a home meet with Marysville Getchell on Oct. 12. She finished the 4,000-meter course in 16 minutes, 46.0 seconds.

Isabella Christensen | Lake Stevens | Volleyball

Christensen, a senior, posted 15 kills and seven digs in the Vikings’ sweep of Jackson on Oct. 13. She also had seven kills and seven aces as Lake Stevens swept Glacier Peak in a matchup of teams unbeaten in Wesco 4A play on Oct. 11.

Everett De Leon | Lake Stevens | Boys Tennis

De Leon went 2-0 in his No. 1 singles matches to help the Vikings earn a pair of victories, including beating Arlington’s Robbie Balderas 6-0, 6-2 as Lake Stevens edged the Eagles 4-3 on Oct. 12.

Zaire Griffin | Lynnwood | Football

Griffin, a sophomore, had 159 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns as the Royals routed Shorecrest 49-0 to earn their first win of the season. Griffin had 81 yards and all three of his TDs on the ground, 44 yards on five receptions and 34 yards as a punt returner.

Megan Hurley | Monroe | Girls Soccer

Hurley, a senior, scored the game-winning goal in the second half as the Bearcats knocked off Wesco 3A/2A contender Mountlake Terrace 1-0 on Oct. 13.

Megan McCoy | Stanwood | Girls Swim & Dive

McCoy, a junior, swam winning times in the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke as the Spartans beat Everett 92-78 on Oct. 13. She finished the 100 freestyle in 1 minute, 3.56 seconds and the 100 backstroke in 1:15.24. McCoy also helped Stanwood’s 200 medley relay team earn a victory.

John Patterson | Meadowdale | Boys Cross Country

Patterson, a sophomore, finished first at the Edmonds School District championship meet at Ballinger Park on Oct. 13. He finished the 4,000-meter course in 13 minutes, 18.4 seconds.

T’Andre Waverly | Kamiak | Football

Waverly, a sophomore, hauled in four TD receptions in the Knights’ 42-21 victory over Jackson on Oct. 14. He scored on catches of 39, 35, 30 and 21 yards.
