The Athlete of the Week nominees for Oct. 17-23. Voting closes at midnight Sunday. The winner will be announced with next week’s poll and in Nov. 1’s paper.

Last week’s winner

Alyssa Armstrong | Marysville Pilchuck | Cross Country

Armstrong, a freshman, finished first in a home meet with Marysville Getchell on Oct. 12. She finished the 4,000-meter course in 16 minutes, 46.0 seconds. Armstrong won The Herald’s Athlete of the Week voting for Oct. 10-16 by claiming 553 (49.2%) of 1,125 votes.

This week’s nominees

Jakob Broadbent | Lake Stevens | Boys Cross Country

Broadbent, a senior, took first place in the Wesco 4A championship race at Arlington Airport on Oct. 22. He finished the 5,000-meter course in 16 minutes, 24.7 seconds.

Joseph Davis | Marysville Pilchuck | Football

Davis, a sophomore, ran for 175 and three touchdowns to help the Tomahawks beat Mount Vernon 31-17 on Oct. 21.

Ayla Grant | Snohomish | Volleyball

Grant, a senior, tallied 25 assists, 11 digs, four kills and two aces as the Panthers bested Archbishop Murphy 3-1 in a matchup of first-place teams in Wesco 3A/2A on Oct. 19. She also had 12 assists, seven digs and five aces in Snohomish’s sweep of Marysville Pilchuck on Oct. 17.

Ben Lee | Jackson | Boys Tennis

Lee, a sophomore, won the singles title at the Class 4A District 1 tournament last week. He didn’t drop a game in his first two matches and beat Jackson teammate Austen Lim 6-0, 6-1 in the title match.

Ty Rusko and Cooper McBride | Arlington | Boys Tennis

Rusko and McBride, both seniors, claimed the Wesco 3A North doubles title at the league tournament last week. The pair topped Stanwood’s Morgan Zill and Ethan Eichler 6-1, 6-2 in the championship match.

Lydia Swenson | Cedarcrest | Girls Cross Country

Swenson, a freshman, took first place in the Wesco 3A/2A South championship race at Arlington Airport on Oct. 22. She finished the 5,000-meter course in 19 minutes, 37.9 seconds.

Madeline Van Hooser | Mountlake Terrace | Girls Swim & Dive

Van Hooser, a sophomore, swam winning times in the 200-yard individual medley and 100 backstroke at the Edmonds School District Championships on Oct. 22. She finished the 200 IM in 2 minutes, 21.59 seconds and the 100 backstroke in 1:01.18. She also helped the Hawks’ 400 freestyle relay team to a victory.
