Vote for The Herald’s Prep Athlete of the Month for October/November

Below are the candidates for The Herald’s Prep Athlete of the Month for October/November. They were the winners of the athlete-of-the-week polls during the months. The balloting for the athlete of the month closes at midnight Sunday. The winner will be featured in a future edition of The Herald.

Note: This Athlete of the Month poll includes winners from both October and November due to the fall sports season ending in early-to-mid November for most teams.

The nominees

Alyssa Armstrong | Marysville Pilchuck | Cross Country

Armstrong, a freshman, finished first in a home meet with Marysville Getchell on Oct. 12. She finished the 4,000-meter course in 16 minutes, 46.0 seconds. Armstrong won The Herald’s Athlete of the Week voting for Oct. 10-16 by claiming 553 (49.2%) of 1,125 votes.

Joseph Davis | Marysville Pilchuck | Football

Davis, a sophomore, ran for 175 and three touchdowns to help the Tomahawks beat Mount Vernon 31-17 on Oct. 21. He won The Herald’s Athlete of the Week poll for Oct. 17-23 by claiming 409 (32.2%) of 1,271 votes.

Paige Gessey | Lynnwood | Volleyball

Gessey, a junior, had a team-high nine kills to go with three blocks and four digs as Lynnwood swept Shorecrest in a battle of Wesco 3A/2A contenders on Oct. 4. She added eight kills, two aces and one block in the Royals’ sweep of Cascade on Oct. 6. Gessey won The Herald’s Athlete of the Week voting for Oct. 3-9 by claiming 845 (43.2%) of 1.957 votes.

Blake Gettmann and Murray Falkin | Shorewood | Boys Tennis

Gettmann and Falkin, both seniors, defeated Edmonds-Woodway’s Grant Oliver and Nalu Akiona 6-1, 7-5 to secure the Class 3A District 1 doubles title Oct. 27. It was the second consecutive district doubles title for Gettmann. They won The Herald’s Athlete of the Week voting for Oct. 24-30 by claiming 462 (29.0%) of 1,591 votes.

Liviya Harrison | Snohomish | Volleyball

Harrison, a senior, piled up 29 kills and 41 digs over three matches to help the Panthers claim the Class 3A District 1 championship. Harrison’s week included posting 14 kills and 16 digs during a five-set win over Meadowdale in the title match. She won The Herald’s Athlete of the Week voting for Nov. 7-13 by claiming 715 (40.2%) of 1,779 votes.

Emma Orthel | Shorecrest | Girls Soccer

Orthel, a junior, scored a goal and added an assist as the Scots clinched a state berth with a 2-0 win over Oak Harbor in a Class 3A District 1 tournament semifinal match on Nov. 2. She also scored a goal in Shorecrest’s 2-0 victory over Shorewood in the district title game Nov. 5. Orthel won The Herald’s Athlete of the Week voting for Oct. 31-6 by claiming 2,928 (41.1%) of 7,124 votes.
