Marysville Fire, EMS levy looks like an increase to me

I received a flyer for the Marysville Fire EMS levy in the mail today. It has the usual “not a new tax” stuff that every levy runs on; however, I’m not entirely sure that’s accurate. From their own website:

“Voters in the city of Marysville and Fire District 12 have historically approved an EMS levy of 50 cents per $1,000 of assessed property value. That rate has now fallen to 45 cents per $1,000.

“If voters restore the EMS levy to 50 cents, that represents a 5-cent increase per $1,000 of property value per year.”

So how is that not a new tax, not a tax increase? 45 cents to 50 cents is an increase, an 11 percent increase. And for many of us there will be a new school levy hitting next year, so remember the burdens already loaded upon us when voting.
