Information on campaign donations should be in voter’s guides

Like many voters, I rely in large part on the information in the voter’s pamphlet compiled and distributed by the county auditor’s office to determine my votes. Over the last two to three years, a critical piece of information has been taken out of these publications: a list of the major campaign donors to each candidate. This information is important. Voters should be informed about the people and organizations making these donations, to better understand what a candidate’s interests will be if holding office.

I will be voting for the auditor candidate who promises to restore this critical piece of information to the voters pamphlet in all future elections.

Editor’s note: Campaign donation information has not previously been included in the voters guide sent by mail by county auditors to registered voters in Washington state. However, voters interested in reviewing candidates’ campaign contributions and spending can get that information from the state Public Disclosure Commission online at www.pdc.wa.gov/political-disclosure-reporting-data.
