Forum: Everett’s new football team offers uninspiring names

I’m not a savvy football fan, but I’ve been following sports teams as they squirm to choose inoffensive names that satisfy everyone. Today, I voted on one of the four names that Mike Thomas said “related” to Everett and represented Washington (“Werewolves? Cascades? Help name Everett’s new football team,” Te Herald, Oct. 9).

So my four choices were the Night Howlers? Huh? How does that represent Everett or Washington? The Werewolves? Again, please explain the relationship, because I don’t get it. The Wolfpack? Oh yeah, I think whole wolfpacks in Eastern Washington are killed sometimes to stop them from eating farm animals, so I’ll give that name a very weak maybe.

I voted on the only logical name, the Cascades, but it felt unoriginal and I was bored while doing so.

Come on, guys. Doesn’t Everett have a Navy Base with Destroyers and Frigates? And don’t we salute to Admirals, Commanders (Commodores) and Lieutenants, when they are in port? Don’t these names offer some suggestions of what life in our city is like?

Don’t we have a pretty famous volcano? Aren’t we famous for the legend of Big Foot or Sasquatch or Yeti? Don’t Anglers herald our fishing history and halt their work for Whale Watching? Don’t hikers converge on our peninsula for hiking the mighty Rain Forest?

These suggest Everett and Washington to me much more than Night Howlers or Werewolves. Personally, as a long-time Everett resident, I am very proud of they way Everett has resiliently reconstructed itself from an old dying mill town to a vibrant, thriving town of world-class medical services, sports fans, artists, aeronautical scientists and businesses. Perhaps we can be a little truer to our town and be a little more original the next time we name a team?
