Wintertide Lights a seasonal event for all

It wasn’t clear whether the writer of a recent letter to the editor meant to imply that use of the term “wintertide” is inappropriate because it’s archaic. If so, he did not present a convincing argument against the use of archaic language.

The term wintertide is entirely appropriate for a public celebration of wintertime, which is what the Legion Park festival entails. It is not a Christian event, but is inclusive of people of all — and no — religion alike. As he noted, Christianity is not the only faith that celebrates the winter season. It certainly wasn’t the first to do so.

Why should a public festival be limited to Christians? I don’t know anyone who objects to the word “Christmas” per se, only its application to secular events; because that excludes non-Christians who want to celebrate the seasons for other reasons than the birth of a historical figure. In this time celebrating peace and love, shouldn’t that sentiment be extended to all people?
