The Everett AquaSox lost their fourth straight in a 7-2 defeat to the Vancouver Canadians at Nat Bailey Stadium on Wednesday.
Shortstop Felnin Celesten tied the game 2-2 in the top of the fifth with an RBI single up the middle with runners on the corners, but Vancouver jumped ahead 4-2 on a two-run single from Alexis Hernandez in the bottom of the frame before the Canadians (25-34) scored three more runs in the eighth.
The AquaSox (29-30) dropped below .500 as starter Adam Maier — a Vancouver native — allowed eight hits, one walk and three earned runs across 4 2/3 innings. The 24-year-old righty tossed five strikeouts. Adam Smith threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings in relief, allowing one hit.
Celesten and outfielder Jonny Farmelo each went 2-for-4 at the plate, and catcher Luke Stevenson (0-for-3) drove in Everett’s first run 0n a sacrifice fly in the top of the third, which infielder Carter Dorighi led off with a walk.
The Canadians took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth with back-to-back RBI singles from outfielder Sam Shaw and infielder Maddox Latta before Celesten tied it in the fifth. Only one AquaSox batter reached base between the sixth and ninth innings. Vancouver reliever Gilberto Batista picked up the win after throwing 2 1/3 shutout innings without allowing a hit.
Everett allowed two of the first three Vancouver batters to reach base via errors in the bottom of the eighth, and Calvin Schapira hit infielder Tucker Toman with a pitch to load the bases with one out. Outfielder J.R. Freethy hit an RBI single to push the lead to 5-2, and while Schapira managed to prevent a run with a force out at home on a grounder from infielder Kendry Chirinos, he walked designated hitter Peyton Williams to make it 6-2.
Jose Geraldo took over for Schapira on the mound, but a balk allowed Freethy to score for the 7-2 final. Canadians reliever Jonathan Todd earned his fifth save of the year, closing out the final two innings with one hit and no walks allowed to go with two strikeouts.
The AquaSox will aim to pick up their first win of the series on Thursday, with the first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. PT.
