EVERETT — Snohomish County began making improvements to its Everett Intermodal facility June 15 as part of a multi-year process to improve the transport of solid waste to regional landfills in eastern Washington.
The planned improvement includes more container storage and a new yard track, a series of parallel tracks used to store, sort, load and unload rail vehicles, a press release said. In this first phase, construction will focus on increasing the rail yard’s operating capacity by nearly 25%.
The $4.43 million project will involve constructing a new loading rail, paving a new stacking pad and constructing stormwater upgrades.
“Managing the county’s garbage becomes more challenging every year as our communities continue to grow,” said David Schonhard, Snohomish County’s solid waste director, in the release. “These improvements are an important step toward strengthening our system so we can keep pace with demand.”
The county processes nearly 665,000 tons of garbage annually through its three transfer stations in Everett, Mountlake Terrace and Arlington. From the intermodal yard, the waste is placed on trains and transported to Roosevelt in eastern Washington.
