EVERETT — After an eighth child was injured falling from a window in Snohomish County this year, officials are urging families to take precautions.

On June 28, firefighters responded to a Lynnwood home after a 5-year-old boy fell from a third-story window onto the concrete below and was critically injured, according to a South County Fire press release. First responders transported the boy to Providence Regional Medical Center Everett, where he was later transferred to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for specialized care.

“We are seeing more severe injuries than in previous years because many of these falls are occurring in newer single-family homes and townhomes, where children’s bedrooms are often located on the third story,” said Shawneri Guzman, community outreach manager for South County Fire and coordinator for Safe Kids Snohomish County, in the release.

As of the beginning of July, Snohomish County is on pace to exceed its 2025 rate, which saw 12 reported incidents of children falling from windows. The weeks around the Fourth of July have historically higher rates of child window falls due to families gathering, temperatures rising, and windows being opened to cool homes, the release said.

Officials warn in the release that while a window screen may keep insects out, it will not prevent a child from falling.

Ways to prevent child window falls:

• Install window stops preventing windows from opening more than 4 inches.

• Keep furniture, beds and climbable objects away from windows.

• Supervise young children around open windows.

• Talk with older children about the dangers of pressing on screens and falling from windows.

South County Fire and Safe Kids Snohomish County offer free window locks to families while supplies last, the release said. Individuals can learn more or request free window safety devices at www.southsnofire.org/PreventWindowFalls.
