MONROE — About 500 people gathered Sunday morning for the third annual Jayme Biendl Memorial 5K run and walk, according to Monroe police.
Biendl, a corrections officer at the Monroe Correctional Complex, was strangled to death on Jan. 29, 2011. Byron Scherf was convicted of the murder.
Sunday’s course took the participants from Sky River Park in Monroe, down Main Street and through the prison grounds. Participants included officers from the correctional complex and other police departments.
Biendl’s sister and father attended. The family asked that any funds raised from the event be given to the Behind the Badge Foundation to assist other law enforcement families.
