Grad students take science studies abroad

Several local graduate students are traveling the globe this summer through Project Dragonfly, a program of the biology department at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.

Courtney Adams, of Lynnwood, traveled to Belize in July. Adams studied coral reefs, manatees, howler monkeys, jaguars and other wildlife while learning the methods communities use to sustain them. Adams is a wildlife rehabilitator at PAWS, a nonprofit in Lynnwood.

Ian Brown, of Marysville, traveled to Paraguay in July. Brown helped develop an Eco-Leadership program with a partner group, Para La Tierra. Brown, who works at a pet boarding business in Bellevue while he continues his studies, wants to find ways to connect people with the animals native to their communities.

Mary Sarnowski, of Everett, traveled to Namibia in July. Sarnowski worked on ongoing research projects, such as radio tracking, cheetah conservation and ecosystem management, as well as the design of school and community programs. Sarnowski is a behaviorist.

Dana Plant, of Brier, will be in Australia this month to study coral reef ecology and the conservation of marine systems along the Great Barrier Reef. Plant is a teacher at Kenmore Elementary School.
