SHORELINE — The Shorewood volleyball team is one step closer to a Wesco 3A South division title after defeating the only team to beat them in league play this year, Glacier Peak, 3-0.

The Grizzlies swept the Thunderbirds back at the end of September in the team’s second league match. Since then, Shorewood has looked to that match and tried to shore up its weaknesses. Tuesday night it paid off.

“(We) adjusted our defense and picked up a lot of balls this time,” said Shorewood head coach Jennifer Chartrand.

The Thunderbirds’ defense held Glacier peak to 13 or fewer points in two of the three games it took to get the win. Coupled with that defense is an offense that is also hitting on all cylinders.

“We were serving very aggressively, passing very consistent, and when we pass the ball consistently, we run a pretty strong offense,” said Chartrand.

Those two factors make a team that seems to be coming together just at the right time. The Thunderbirds have just two regular season matches left, one against Shorcrest (as yet winless in the Wesco 3A South) and one against Meadowdale, the team breathing down their necks in the standings.

“Meadowdale is going to be right behind us I think, going into Monday is going to be a tough match,” said Chartrand, who said her team “barely” defeated the Mavericks in their meeting earlier this season.

The team has changed since then. “Were really working hard on trusting each other on the court,” said Chartrand. “Over the past few weeks we’ve kind of turned a corner. Were starting to peak.”

Don’t think that means Chartrand thinks her team is overconfident. “They just want to keep fighting and finish strong. They think they are the underdog all the time.”
