Edmonds-Woodway got the job done in its 4A District 1 girls soccer playoff opener.
Savanah VanCitters starting things with a goal at the four-minute mark. Then Rylee Peterson had what turned out to be the game-winner in the 60th minute to lead the Warriors to a 2-1 victory over Arlington, Oct. 29 at Edmonds Stadium.
Arlington’s Morgan Busby tied the score at the 55-minute mark, but Edmonds-Woodway re-energized after Peterson’s go-ahead goal.
“We responded really well,” Edmonds-Woodway coach Bill LeCompte said. “We took it to a different level. Once we got that second goal we took control.”
The Warriors have won 10 out of their last 12 games and closed the regular season with a 4-1 victory over Jackson. Alyce Pattison scored three of those goals with Peterson scoring the other.
“We’re playing the way we should have been playing the entire season,” LeCompte said.
The victory over the Timberwolves came two days after a tough 3-1 loss to Kamiak. While no one was pleased with the way Edmonds-Woodway played in that game, LeCompte said that the players never gave up, even after falling behind 3-0.
The Warriors viewed the Jackson game as an opportunity to start another streak.
“They came out and responded. It was a hard-fought game,” LeCompte said.
Beating Jackson helped boost Edmonds-Woodway’s confidence just in time for the start of the district playoffs, LeCompte said.
The victory sent Edmonds-Woodway (10-5-2 overall) into a Nov. 1 semifinal game against Snohomish, the results of which were not available for this edition of The Weekly Herald.
The Panthers beat Edmonds-Woodway 2-0 during the regular season. The winner faces either Lake Stevens or Jackson in the district title game on Nov. 3, while the loser plays in a loser-out contest also on Nov. 3.
