Shorecrest eliminated Mount Vernon from playoff contention and advanced to the 3A state tournament with the victory.

The Scots jumped on top 3-0 behind a goal from Sophia Flohr in the ninth minute and two Nicole Harris goals in the 31st and 34th minutes.

The Bulldogs responded with goals from Jenna Moores in the 52nd minute and Victoria Divita in the 68th minute, but could never find the equalizer.

“For us it was a goal,” Shorecrest coach Mindy Dalziel said. “We had only come in with four losses and it is two those two teams that are playing in the district championship. Our team realized towards the end of the season that they were that talented and that good to make it to state.”

The victory for the Scots didn’t come out without a bit of a second half scare.

“We did not execute the second half what I asked them to execute,” Dalziel said. “I think the 3-0 lead in their heads, in my girls’ heads was enough. And against a team like that, a team that has won 12-plus games, it’s not enough. They got really complacent.

“It was nerve-racking,” Dalziel added. “It makes me grow grey hair.”
