LAKE STEVENS — The Lake Stevens girls basketball team didn’t shoot particularly well, but made shots when it counted and defeated Monroe 63-59 in a Wesco North game Friday at Lake Stevens High School.
The Vikings remained unbeaten at 4-0 in the conference and 6-0 overall.
“There were a lot of positives to take away,” Lake Stevens coach Randall Edens said. “We were down by as many as nine in the second half, so to be able to come back and play with a lot of poise in the fourth quarter, that was really great to see.”
Monroe led 49-43 after three quarters before Lake Stevens rallied. A pair of steals by Brittney Pahukoa sparked a Vikings run with about 31/2 minutes to play and Corinne Burke sank a pair of free throws with eight seconds to go to clinch the win.
Monroe stayed in the game despite failing to make a two-point field goal in the second half. The Bearcast made six 3-pointers and the rest of their points came on free throws. Monroe (1-3, 1-4) was 18-for-23 from the line for the game while Lake Stevens was 15-for-29.
“They shot free throws well and we didn’t and that probably should have cost us,” Edens said. “We just couldn’t make a shot, but we did hit some free throws in the fourth quarter and that was big.”
Sophomore guard Brooke Pahukoa had 18 points and junior guard Katie Goddard added 11 for Lake Stevens.
Alyssa Brazel scored 15 points, Suzanna Ohlsen scored 13 and Ashley Alexander scored 11 for Monroe.
“Monroe is a very good team,” Edens said. “They struggled a little out of the gate and they’re kind of where we were last year. But they have the ability to turn it around if they keep shooting like they did tonight.”
