Prep girls basketball Lake Stevens 49, Snohomish 37

LAKE STEVENS — On the back of nine 3-point goals and a stingy first half defense, Lake Stevens defeated Snohomish Wednesday in its first Wesco North girls basketball game of the season.

Lake Stevens jumped out to an early 18-2 lead behind Katie Goddard, who scored all nine of her points on 3s in the first quarter.

“We hit some big shots early,” Lake Stevens head coach Randy Edens said. “They came out and zoned us and we got in a rhythm and hit four 3s.”

By the end of the first half, Lake Stevens had built a 34-11 lead.

“Defensively we were on top of things with our pressure and we were also really good in the half court,” Edens added. “That set the tone for a pretty impressive first half, but I’m disappointed to finish the way we did.”

Snohomish was able to climb back in the game in the second half, but could never overcome the large first-half deficit.

Point guard Corinne Burke led Lake Stevens in scoring with 10 points and earned the praise of the head coach. “She hit three 3-pointers and really did a great job managing things for us,” Edens said.

Mahea Puha added eight points, all in the first half, for Lake Stevens.
