Capt. Gary Hetzel relieved Capt. Michael Kidd as commander of Navy Region Northwest Reserve Component Command at a change of command ceremony Aug. 28.

The command oversees the mobilization readiness of selected reservists serving at the 10 Navy Operational Support Centers throughout the Northwest region.

During Capt. Kidd’s tenure he oversaw the mobilization of 1,439 sailors, realigned the region from 18 Navy operational support centers in 10 states to 11 in six states, and orchestrated the first Navy Returning Warrior Workshop followed by three successful workshops consisting of 800 participants.

Kidd was presented the Navy’s Legion of Merit award. Kidd retired from the Navy after 34 years of service, but plans to continue working for the Navy as a civilian.

Marine Corps Pfc. Jaymes R. Chuderski is scheduled to serve in Afghanistan. He is the son of Cecily Tillinghast of Mukilteo and brother of Kaitlyn Chuderski of Ellensburg.

He graduated in 2007 from Meadowdale High School and joined the Marines in January. He graduated from basic training in April at Camp Pendleton, Calif. Following boot camp, he is serving with the First Battalion, 4th Marines, 1st Marine Division Weapons company, 81st Platoon, Bravo Section.

Chief Master Sgt. Ronnie W. Nelson has retired from the Air Force after 24 years of service. Most recently Nelson was a public affairs career field manager assigned to the Office of the Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs at the Pentagon, Washington, D.C. Nelson enlisted in the Air Force in December 1984.

During his military career as a public affairs and multimedia professional, he also served in Germany, England, Florida, Louisiana and Hawaii.

Some of his major military decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, six awards of the Air Force Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal and the Air Force Achievement Medal.

He is the son of Robert and Carolee Nelson of Oak Harbor and the husband of Gayle Nelson. The chief master sergeant graduated in 1980 from Oak Harbor High School, and he earned an associate in applied science degree in 1995 from the Community College of the Air Force, Maxwell Air Force Base.

Air Force Reserve Tech. Sgt. Tory Miller of Everett is serving again in Iraq. The 446th Civil Engineer Squadron of McChord Air Force Base is scheduled to perform base maintenance functions such as repairing electrical and plumbing fixtures. In addition to base maintenance, the team will serve as trainers and assist in turning over operations to the Iraqis in 2010. Miller worked the trenches of the desert the last time the squadron deployed in 2007. Reservists in the squadron are electricians, plumbers, masons and carpenters all classified as masters in their civilian professions.

Air Force Reserve Airman Mark N. Spear graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. He is the son of Mark and Carla Spear of Bothell.

Army Pvt. Cruz A. Griffin has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. He is the son of Steve Griffin of Marysville, and is a 2008 graduate of Marysville-Pilchuck High School.

Navy Seaman Ralph I. Petty, son of Janna Israel of Snohomish and Ralph Petty of Stanwood, recently completed basic training at U.S. Navy Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

Navy Seaman Recruit Brendan L. Mooney, son of Mary and David Mooney of Edmonds, recently completed basic training at U.S. Navy Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. Mooney is a 2008 graduate of Bishop Blanchet High School, Seattle.

Navy Seaman Apprentice Michael J. Hunter, son of Carolyn and Michael Hunter of Marysville, recently completed basic training at U.S. Navy Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. Hunter is a 2008 graduate of Marysville-Pilchuck High School.

Navy Seaman Brandon J. McClenaghan, son of Patricia and Brian McClenaghan of Arlington, recently completed basic training at U.S. Navy Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. McClenaghan is a 2007 graduate of Arlington High School.

Army Pvt. Meghan A. Brown has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. She is the daughter of Wendy Audette of Clinton, and a 2005 graduate of South Whidbey High School.

Army Cadet Reginald John Carlson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Carlson of Mukilteo, recently completed cadet basic training at the U.S. Military Academy. Carlson entered West Point on June 29. Carlson graduated from Kamiak High School. He plans to graduate from West Point in 2013 and be commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Army.

Matthew L. Destito has entered basic cadet training at the Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colo., in preparation to enter the first academic year at the academy. The six-week, two-phased orientation program must be successfully completed by the cadets prior to entering their freshman year. He is the son of Daniel Destito of Everett, and a 2009 graduate of Everett High School.

Christopher J. Olson has entered basic cadet training at the Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colo., in preparation to enter the first academic year at the academy. The six-week, two-phased orientation program must be successfully completed by the cadets prior to entering their freshman year. He is the son of Jesse and Carol Olson of Oak Harbor, and is a 2009 graduate of Oak Harbor High School.
