Roll out the barrel

Oom-pah-pah: Leavenworth, the state’s faux Bavarian enclave on U.S. 2, is preparing for its annual Oktoberfest during the first three weekends in October, with a noontime parade each Saturday, followed by a keg tapping at 1 p.m.

Remember to designate a driver, because friends don’t let friends drive drunk or wear alpine hats and lederhosen.

  • You’re right after the bowling ball, but before the plate of spaghetti: Two South Korean scientists, using a wind tunnel, have determined that flying fish have the aerodynamics to stay aloft as well as a small to midsize bird.

The scientists said they would have made their discovery sooner, but their research was fairly low on the list of Things We Can Put in a Wind Tunnel to See What Happens.

  • Out of their gourds: An East Coast team says it has successfully chucked a 9.5-pound pumpkin more than a mile using an air cannon in Moab, Utah, potentially setting a world record for squash-launching.

It’s a shame they weren’t higher on the wind tunnel list; they might have got a zucchini to go at least 3 miles.
