EVERETT – An early morning fire today caused an estimated $30,000 damage to a greenhouse at Mariner High School south of Everett, officials said. It is being investigated as an arson.

A passerby noticed black smoke coming from the structure just after 5 a.m., Snohomish County Fire District 1 spokeswoman Leslie Hynes said.

The blaze was less than a block away from a fire station and it was quickly extinguished.

Most of the damage was to a storage area connected to the greenhouse.

The fire did not affect the beginning of the school day, Mukilteo School District spokesman Andy Muntz said.

The cause was under investigation, Hynes said.
