MARYSVILLE — The Cascade Bruins had the big plays, but the Marysville-Pilchuck Tomahawks had the consistent offensive attack.

Seven rushers for 306 yards worth of consistency.

M-P’s feature formation— a three-running back system nicknamed “full house” — and its ability to halt Cascade’s big plays late in the game vaulted the Tommies to a 35-21 nonconference high school football victory at a rain-soaked Quil Ceda Stadium Friday night.

M-P (2-1 overall) jumped out to a 21-0 lead, pounding the ball with quick-hitting runs up the gut and using long, clock-consuming drives to wear down Cascade. M-P’s 14-play, 45-yard drive took more than six minutes off the clock and was capped with Tylor Klep’s 1-yard quarterback sneak for a touchdown, which left less than a minute to play in the first half.

M-P started each possession of the second half in Cascade territory, methodically wearing and beating down the Cascade defense. But the Cascade offense awakened, putting together a three-play drive spanning more than 75 yards in 28 seconds. Quarterback Larry Bruce capped the drive, connecting with wide receiver Johnnie Hilliard on a 42-yard touchdown pass.

M-P made a statement drive to open the second half, marching down the field with running back Tyler Thompson scoring from a yard out for a 28-7 lead.

Cody House then intercepted Larry Bruce’s pass and returned it 25 yards to the Bruins’ 24-yard line. Andre Pina (15 carries for 123 yards) later punched it in from 4 yards out for a 35-7 lead.

Cascade (0-3 overall) followed back-to-back scores and had a chance at another. Larry Bruce connected with split end Lex Duncan for a 5-yard TD completion. Steven Rios then scooped up an M-P fumble and returned it for a TD return.

M-P’s Pina was dropped by Cascade behind the line of scrimmage on 4th-and-4, giving the ball to Cascade on its own 49-yard line with 7:14 remaining in the game. But the Cascade offense stalled and M-P ran out the clock out.
