PREP SOFTBALL/BASEBALL ROUNDUP: Stanwood catcher hits game-winning home run

STANWOOD — There were few hits and a bit of drama but Stanwood remained undefeated Thursday night, escaping both the rain and Arlington for a 2-1 Wesco North win.
Stanwood catcher Sam Bingham made a mistake. With runners on first and third in the sixth inning of a scoreless game and none out, Arlington did what just about every team does and tried to steal second. In attempt to make a huge out and catch the runner, Bingham threw the ball into the outfield allowing the run to score from third.
After pitcher Brittany Jeans battled out of the inning, Bingham quickly made up for the error.
In the bottom of the sixth with a runner on first and two outs, Bingham knocked the ball over the fence for her second home run of the year.
“That’s what makes the game fun,” Stanwood coach Cherlyn Schander said. “They just never give up.”
Bingham finished 2-for-3 and Jeans, who struck out seven and walked just one, recorded her fifth win of the season.
