Apply: Educational scholarship offered to teacher candidates

Sno-Isle Unit 22 of the Washington State School Retirees Association is currently offering a $1,000 scholarship to a prospective teacher candidate.

Interested students must be a resident of Snohomish County or Island County, a junior or senior enrolled in a four-year university in Washington and have been accepted into a Department of Education. Applicants must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Selection will be based on transcripts, leadership and activities, and essays.

The deadline for receipt of applications is June 15.

Help: Snohomish Food Bank benefit concert is Sunday

A Tribute to Wired and Unplugged is the theme of the fifth annual benefit concert for the Snohomish Community Food Bank on Sunday at the Oxford Saloon and Eatery in Snohomish.

This year’s concert is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. and will feature six musical acts that trace their roots to the former Wired and Unplugged Coffeehouse in Snohomish, which closed in 2008. Scheduled to perform are the Wired Band; Valhalla Hill featuring Rory Corbin; Beth Whitney; Blue and Green featuring Volkert Volkersz; and Harry Miller, Zach Trandum and Rachael Teixeira and Jake Sand.

The Oxford is located at 913 First St., Snohomish. Admission is a $10 donation to the food bank.

Explore: Learn about the potential of tidal energy

Washington State University Extension Snohomish County Beach Watchers will give a free presentation on tidal energy and renewable resources on Wednesday at Rose Hill Community Center, 304 Lincoln Ave., Mukilteo.

Craig Collar of the Snohomish County Public Utility District will discuss how tidal power affects the marine life of Puget Sound.

The WSU Snohomish County Extension Beach Watchers will offer another free presentation, “Puget Sound Starts Here,” on April 14 by Dave Ward of Snohomish County Surface Water Management.

Go: Support Skagit Hospice Foundation at Oscar Night benefit

The Skagit Hospice Foundation will present a benefit Oscar Night 2010 at 4:30 p.m. Sunday at the Trumpeter Public House, 416 Myrtle St., Mount Vernon.

The evening’s events will include viewing of the 82nd annual Academy Awards, a raffle for two Alaska Airline tickets, contests for the best movie character, movie star costume or outfit, games, prizes and refreshments.

Get: Free tax return preparation at EvCC

Everett Community College’s accounting department and AARP are teaming up to offer free tax preparation to middle- and low-income taxpayers, especially those ages 60 and older.

Tax clinics will be offered from 4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays until April 15 at EvCC’s Rainier Hall, Room 104, 2000 Tower St., Everett.

Those seeking tax return help should bring a copy of last year’s income tax returns, Social Security numbers for all dependents, W-2 forms for each employer, unemployment compensation statements, all forms indicating federal income tax paid, and child-care provider information.
