Garfield stops Marysville-Pilchuck girls 69-59

TACOMA — Sophomore Nyasha Sarju scored 21 points and Cora McManus scored 14 to go with a game-high nine rebounds, and Garfield beat Marysville-Pilchuck 69-59 Wednesday in a first-round game at the Class 4A girls basketball tournament.
The Bulldogs (15-9) trailed just once and led by as many 17 in the game. Sarju was 6 of 13 from the field and 8 of 10 from the free-throw line. McManus was 6 of 9 from the field and hit both free throws.
The Tomahawks (17-7) were making their first trip to state in 13 years. Marysville-Pilchuck hit just 9 of 20 free throws and turned the ball over 21 times in the loss. Morgan Martinis led the Tomahawks with 18 points, including four 3-pointers. Dacia Heckendorf chipped in 14 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
