PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Marysville-Pilchuck keeps Cascade from pulling off tough trifecta

Published 11:23 pm Friday, January 15, 2010

EVERETT — The Cascade girls basketball team had a chance to complete the unthinkable Friday night. After entering the week without a Wesco North win, the Bruins came close to a three-game sweep that included Monroe and Marysville-Pilchuck — the two teams atop the conference.

But Marysville-Pilchuck used a big fourth quarter to deny the sweep and take a 74-60 victory.

The Tomahawks’ Andi Adams and the Bruins’ Danielle Love dueled to a draw, scoring 29 points each on the night.

“It became a free throw shooting contest,” Cascade coach Carlos Humphrey said. “To their credit Adams caught fire in the fourth quarter.”

Adams was 8-for-12 from the free-throw line and the Tommies hit 18 of their 27 attempts while Cascade had just 19 attempts from the charity stripe.

Love, a University of Oregon recruit, had her biggest game of the year, adding nine rebounds, five blocks and four steals to her season-high 29 points.

“She was due for a big game,” Humphrey said. “She caught fire early and was consistent.”

The 6-foot-2 senior couldn’t be stopped by anyone wearing red Friday but fatigue slowed her after playing all of the previous two games this week.

“She was winded down the stretch,” Humphrey said. “If we don’t have her in the game we don’t have a chance.”

After losing Love for several games midseason due to a disciplinary issue, the Bruins — playing their best ball of the season — feel like they have a chance to make a run to the playoffs despite sitting eighth in the league standings.

“We still have a chance,” Humphrey said. “We are scrapping for that fifth spot and once you get in the playoffs anything can happen.”
