Mukilteo kitchen fire displaces homeowners

MUKILTEO — Food left cooking on the stove caused a fire Sunday morning that displaced a couple.

Fire crews were summoned to a 3,800-square-foot home in the 14000 block of Puget Sound Boulevard south of Mukilteo about 11:30 a.m., Snohomish County Fire District 1 spokeswoman Leslie Hynes said.

A man was home at the time and he got out safely. The man told firefighters he was eating lunch in the basement when smoke alarms sounded. He found the kitchen in flames, Hynes said.

The fire was contained to the kitchen, but the smoke heavily damaged the house, she said. Damage was estimated at more than $400,000.

Local Red Cross volunteers also responded and offered help for the homeowners.
